The year 2025 is coming to an end and it’s impossible that Netflix won’t release Christmas-themed movies before it ends. Just like last year Netflix is set to bring a slew of films this year, and one of these is the new film “A Merry Little Ex-Mas” which was released on Netflix on November 12, 2025. Let’s explore the film’s story and explain its ending, with spoilers.
Kate and Everett’s memorable journey:
The story begins when Kate was a college student. She was no ordinary student, but a very good academically, which led to her landing a job as an architect at a Boston firm while still in college. But Kate’s life changes completely when she meets Everett, who was also a medical student at the same college.
Initially, their relationship remains a friendship, but when Everett completes his medical studies and must return to his hometown as a doctor, he confesses his love to Kate.
Because Kate has been in a relationship with him for a long time, she immediately agrees to marry him, and they leave Boston for “Winter Light.” Everett opens his own medical clinic, but Kate, burdened with family responsibilities remains a housewife. Their lives are going well and their two children Sienna and Gabriel grow up.
Sienna’s Harry Potter Boyfriend Nigel:
Kate’s daughter Sienna is now grown up and preparing to enter a relationship. Meanwhile Sienna meets a man named Nigel, who is a Harry Potter tour guide by profession. He takes tourists on tours of the locations where the Harry Potter films were shot. Finally the day has come when Sienna invites her boyfriend Nigel over for dinner where she plans to introduce him to her family.

Sienna’s family includes her parents, brother and two grandparents, Mike and Derryl.
The entire family is overjoyed to meet Nigel. However, as a tour guide Nigel is a very talkative and humorous person, which is why Sienna’s father and grandfather often tease him.
Dad’s Secrets Reveal Party:
Nigel’s talkative nature leads him to reveal something that had been kept hidden from everyone until now, when he goes to Sienna’s house.
He reveals to the family that Sienna’s father Everett, is dating a girl named Tess Wiley. However the family is not shocked by this, except for one person: Kate, as everyone in the house already knew that Everett was seeing a girl.
Tess Wiley and Kate Confrontation:
Even though Everett was dating Tess, he hadn’t yet introduced his new girlfriend to his wife, knowing that a face-to-face encounter would lead to trouble. This is why Everett was waiting for the right moment, However the right time never comes and so it is with her, as one day when Kate goes to her father-in-law’s hardware shop, he refuses to let her in.
However Kate is smart enough to realize that her father-in-law is trying to hide something from her and as she enters the store, Everett and his date, Tess are present there.
Chet and Kate’s Alliance:
As the story progresses, Kate is devastated after learning that her husband is dating another woman. However, she doesn’t let her grief show and only shares it with a woman named ‘Doris’ who is her friend.
Meanwhile as Thanksgiving approaches Kate plans a big surprise. However upon arriving at the special place, the children and family are disappointed,
because they didn’t want to celebrate Christmas in the old ways. However, Nigel stays to support Kate. But Kate had no idea that this was where she would meet the most beautiful man in her life. It’s there that she meets a young man named Chet Morey, who despite being much younger than her is attracted to her. However, the relationship between them transcends human lust.
Kate and Everett’s Closeness:
Meanwhile when Kate visits Everett at his home, she becomes a little angry because her husband never took a single day off from the clinic when he lived with her, even though he’s home today. However while they’re skating together, Everett’s hand remains inside Kate’s sweater, which makes Tess a little worried because she witnessed it firsthand and senses that they’re getting closer again, which she doesn’t like at all. To allay her suspicions Tess confronts Kate about it, though Kate bluntly tells her that the sweater incident was just a coincidence.
Gift Exchange on Christmas Eve:
Even though this Christmas wasn’t a happy one for Kate, she was still eagerly awaiting it. As the gift exchange began Tess was the first to gift Kate a pair of sandals.
Kate then gave her a handmade hat in return.
Kate also gifted Everett a grill machine and Everett gave her his favorite perfume, angering Tess because he had given Tess AirPods.
However the entire family observed the entire incident and tried to end the gift ceremony immediately, knowing the situation could escalate.
Meanwhile a scene featuring Chet’s six-pack also occurred, as a Christmas tree caught fire. Although it was unharmed and extinguished, one thing remained unquenched: Tess’s anger. Because she was angry to Everett and leaves him.
Climax-Everett Family Bonding:
Now that Tess is gone from this story, Everett suddenly returns home that same night and confesses everything he holds in his heart to Kate, telling her that he still loves her as much as he did in college.
The next day, when Kate returns home, she finds a huge crowd gathered as everyone in town knew that Kate was soon to be divorced and was leaving the city for Boston. However seeing the people’s love and her husband’s repeated confession, she melts again and changes her mind about not leaving the city.
Knowing all this, Everett changes his mind about getting a divorce and tells Kate again that he wants to spend the rest of his life with her.
The main objective of this film was to tell that our relationships are always strong, we just forget to put effort into them with time.
